MAKE IT WORK FOR YOUR LESSON

How to use the flashcard maker

  1. Enter each word and, where useful, a short clue or definition written for your learners. You control the content; TopicKite does not invent definitions.
  2. With a clue for every entry, start Clue first to try remembering the word before flipping. Word first lets you explain a word before checking its clue.
  3. Try an answer before revealing it. After checking, choose Got it or Practise again. These are your own study judgements, not an automatically graded vocabulary test.
  4. Review the cards marked for practice, or print foldable cards. Cut the outer lines, fold on the centre line, and keep the word and clue on opposite sides.

Write clues that make a useful question

A helpful clue points to one intended answer in this set. Avoid including the answer itself, and decide whether a simpler explanation or a specific subject definition suits the lesson. If two clues could reasonably describe either word, revise the clues before using the set for self-checking.

Use recall before revealing

Pause long enough to say, write or think of an answer before you flip the card. Mark a card for another pass if you recognised the answer only after seeing it. The review queue lets you spend another short round on those cards instead of repeatedly cycling through the entire list.

Without clues: practise remembering a spelling

A card without a clue first shows the word to study. Turn it over to cover the word, then say or write the spelling from memory. Reveal the spelling to check it before marking the card. For a typed and automatically checked answer, use the spelling-practice tool with the same list.

Questions about flashcards

Do I need a clue for every card?

No. Cards without clues use a cover-and-recall spelling prompt. Clue-first study is available when all entries have clues.

Are the definitions checked automatically?

No. You supply and review the clues. TopicKite displays them as entered and does not claim to verify their accuracy.

A LITTLE GUIDANCE

From words to “I’ve got it!”

  1. Add your list. Use 3–24 distinct words with 2–18 Latin letters each. Accents, spaces, hyphens and apostrophes work too.
  2. Give it meaning. Use the word-and-clue fields, or paste entries with a vertical bar: forest | An area covered with trees. Use one entry per line when adding clues.
  3. Create, then explore. All six activities use the same list. Save favourites to My lists on this device. Play view clears the setup away; Reset starts the current game again.
  4. Play, print or share. Print a worksheet or all six activities, with separate answer keys. Shared links reproduce the list and game layout.

Matching uses clues when every word has a different clue. Otherwise, it uses scrambled-letter spelling matches. Equivalent anagram answers are accepted. Bingo uses the largest board your list can fill without repeated words.

PASS THE POSSIBILITY ON

Good words travel.

This link opens your list and activity in the focused play view. Each person plays on their own device.

The link includes all words and clues, including answers. Share it only with people you intend to see the list.

A LITTLE LESS SCREEN TIME

Clean worksheets, with room to think. Use your browser’s “Save as PDF” for a digital copy.

YOUR WORDS, YOUR BUSINESS

A small, simple studio.

Your current list, unfinished edits and lists you choose to save are kept in this browser’s local storage. My lists holds up to 12 lists on this device; it does not sync between devices. We don’t send them to a database or load third-party fonts. Optional Google Analytics loads only after you choose to allow it; change your choice using Analytics settings in the footer.

Share links contain the complete list and clues in the URL fragment. Anyone with the link can read them. Hosting providers may keep ordinary request logs; fragments aren’t part of HTTP requests.

“Clear current list” removes the current list and unfinished edits, then resets to the example. Lists on your shelf stay until you remove them from My lists. It doesn’t delete exported files or links you’ve already shared. Avoid putting personal information in a word list.

YOUR LITTLE LESSON SHELF

Good lists are worth keeping.

Save up to 12 lists on this device. Use the same title to update a saved list, or a new title to keep a new one.

These lists stay in this browser. Export a text copy to keep a separate backup.
